In 10th grade, our district focuses on developing the "whole child" by exposing them to a wide range of cultural literature. Not only do we want our students to understand the strifes that human beings face across the globe regardless of race or ethnicity, but we also want them to learn more about themselves and their unique role in society. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a powerful, evocative, and genuine novel with themes and motifs that will help our students become more well-rounded individuals. Books are an ideal medium for individuals to simultaneously learn about the world, about others, and about the self. Unfortunately, due to ongoing budget cuts and economic hardships, our district has already exceeded its budget for class novel sets. My students and I are excited and hopeful to bring this new and wonderful piece of literature. With your help, my honors class will gain a unique and meaningful opportunity to "travel" across the world in the shoes of another. They will enjoy a lasting experience that will make them - and by extension, our community - even more empathetic and wise.
