When students return from school after summer break, I plan on taking my classroom in a whole new direction. My goal is to increase student engagement with the hopes that it will result in higher achievement.
Next year, I plan on teaching with Sketchnoting, hands on projects, and Interactive Notebooks. Research has shown that Sketchnoting increases comprehension significantly, so I'm hoping that it will help my lower achieving, IEP, and English Language Learners to help bridge the comprehension gap.
Our school's budget is really tight, so I would be on my own to get the supplies necessary to implement Project Based Learning, Sketchnoting, and Interactive Notebooks.
The colored pencils, markers, scissors, and glue will be used frequently to complete Interactive Notebook assignments, book projects, and to bring their Sketchnotes to life. The anchor chart paper will be used for gallery walk discussions, group assignments, and teacher-led demonstrations for Sketchnoting. The composition notebooks will serve as the students' Interactive Notebooks and also house the students' Sketchnotes. The Post-it notes will be used for exit tickets, formative assessments, and will aid in literary analysis. The highlighters will help to emphasize student notes and will help students during text annotations/close reads. The erasers will be used daily for students to correct any errors that are made. The pencil sharpener will be so that students can quickly sharpen their writing utensils and return to their work. Lastly, the colored paper will be used to make students' projects stand out--both during presentations and while they are displayed in the classroom.
