My school is a high-needs school with 74% free/reduced lunch. The students are eager to learn but also have limited resources at home and at school due to low the current school budget cuts. They soak up the information given and want to learn more. They could read more with a classroom library filled with different kinds of reading and writing materials. My students would greatly benefit from a purposefully arranged, carefully planned library geared to their specific needs. They have limited opportunities to visit libraries and media centers to read onsite and check out books. I want to give them these experiences and make reading something they experience daily through the use of these books and magazines in high-interest learning libraries. These materials will make reading & writing more authentic and meaningful to them. Literature in our classroom library is the "heart" of effective literacy instruction.
