My students struggle with behavioral issues and need extra support in their education. Their lives are often unpredictable because of the harsh environment they've grown up in. Students should feel comfortable and safe when they enter the classroom. Reading can help students create an emotional connection to stories that help them relate to situations from their own lives. I am in need of 4 Big Joe bean bag chairs to put in the reading corner that I have created in my classroom. We only have 1 chair in our reading corner meaning that all other students must sit in their desks, some of which are falling apart. I want my students to understand that reading can take place outside of their desks and can be a calm, relaxing activity to get in touch with their emotions. I would eventually like them to generalize this skill and even read at home in a comfy spot or at their local library. I want them to know that reading can be an enjoyable activity. By only having students read at their desks, I feel as though I am limiting students to the possibilities. We do a variety of reading activities every day. Students are involved in literature circles, guided reading activities and receive independent reading time each day. By providing students with a more comfortable seating option, they are more likely to be engaged with the learning that is taking place instead of worrying about their back hurting from the desks being too small for them or that the desk is falling apart. Finally, it will give my students a sense of pride knowing that someone donated these chairs to our class and that there are people out there in the world that care about them that they haven't even met before.
