My students sometimes struggle to understand what's happening in the world, and to see the value of literacy and reading in helping reduce the world's problems. I would like them to read novels that present tough challenges, for them to grapple with and enjoy reading relevant books, especially modern, but also classic ones. Teen suicide, depression, bullying, LGBTQ issues, environmental sustainability, healthy relationships, and the importance of empathy... all of these issues are presented in the books on my list. They will discuss and write about these reading experiences with one another and help build a stronger community of readers.
