I teach history through the lens of current events and discussion of relevant, high-interest, and controversial topics. This approach calls for constant conversation and recording of ideas in service of a summative task. My project aims to enhance the classroom setting and foster deeper thinking. By being able to sit in small group arrangements or to combine kidney tables for larger arrangements, students will better be able to discuss what we do in class and work collaboratively on worthy tasks. Instead of worrying constantly about paper and graphic organizers for each conversation, groups can write or chart their discussion points, questions, and comparisons for all to see and approach and for teachers to better provide feedback and further questioning. The tables would truly promote a student-centered classroom.
