Everyday my class does a "cool down" period after recess and/or PE. Actually, we do this type of activity after any unstructured activity or, depending on the student's needs, as needed. All of my my students really struggle to calm themselves and regulate their emotions. Some students can't identify what emotion(s) they are feeling which creates more frustration during a time that is meant to soothe. We focus a lot of instruction on being able to self-regulate one's emotions and being able to take these calm down techniques outside of the school. This is were Mindfulness Yoga has come into play. We were looking for a new way to help my students self-regulate not only at school, but also outside of the school setting. We watch whatever Kid yoga videos we can find on the internet. They will try any routine!!! One of the greatest things I have witnessed is my group of students, who regularly feel high levels of anxiety all day, in a calm, serene state as they are practicing their yoga. I would like to provide each student with their own mat, or their own area so they may begin to take more ownership in their practice. At this time, they all eagerly lay down on the floor, or on towels. We can't make them like or do yoga to help them calm, we can only provide the experience.
