Alternative means of communication plays an integral role in helping my students become more independent individuals. It allows them to share wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas when spoken communication is not always an option. For children with special needs, having this technology available early on will help them to become more independent individuals who can advocate for themselves and become active members of their communities. Currently, in school and during community-based field trips, we are working hard to incorporate alternative means of communication so students can request chips during snack time, express that they need to go to the bathroom, ask for help locating items during community-based shopping trips, say "Hi" to a friend, ask an adult for help opening a juice box, and even ask someone to play. In addition, these voice output devices also provide learning opportunities; we can help train our students' families on how to incorporate alternative forms of communication in the home. With your help, we can further promote the use of alternative forms of communication tailored to each child's specific needs. Everyone deserves a voice. THANK YOU for considering helping my school!
