My students are exposed to a lot of environments and experiences at a young age. They often play the role of a student, a sibling, a translator, and sometimes a parent. This creates a lot of stress for my students, impacting their behavior negatively. Building character allows students to intrinsically identify his/her needs and molds the environment in which they live.
The Take a Minute station will included several modalities for self regulation. The space being utilized is very bare and cold. In this project, we are requesting seating such as the Jumbo Beanbag Seat and furniture such as the activity table to make the environment feel safe and inviting. We are also requesting tools to practice self regulation. Some tools are kinesthetic such as the interlox blocks, magnetic sand, play doh, and stress balls. Other tools are relaxing such as puzzles, crayons, and books.
The students who are feeling angry or frustrated will need to take a minute. They will go to the center, set their timer, and choose an activity to complete for that minute (blocks, coloring, kinetic sand). After they have calmed down, they will identify their emotion and what was wrong.
Our students are our future, and they need to practice self regulation daily to foster responsibility and positive behavior. The Take a Minute station is an opportunity for students to have a physical space for practicing these skills. The goal of the Take a Minute station is for students to identify when they are getting frustrated or upset and be able to get themselves back to calm. After a student has calmed down, he/she can then focus on their learning, act more positively, and regulate his/her emotions independently without the Take a Minute Station.
This is a life skill that my students desperately need.
