Think about a song that is linked to a personal memory. This memory is most likely from years ago. Research tells us that our brains are wired to connect music with memory. Now, imagine if you would have had a song or musical melody tied to a subject you would have had a hard time understanding, or even better applying. I can bet that if you would have had a series of sounds, a song or melody tied with content that was difficult to understand or remember, you'd still be singing it today. I plan to use the trombone to teach various concepts from our first grade curriculum. One example I have is a game we play called "guess my shape." Rather than just telling students I have 6 square faces, or 2 square faces and 4 rectangular faces, I would have each face symbolized by a note or melody from the trombone. The students would have to not only know what face of the 3D object I am speaking of, but will also have to count the beat of the note. This is only one of many ideas that I have planned out and am hoping to be able to carry out the ideas through playing trombone in the classroom. It is my hope that bringing in the sound of the trombone will help them not only make meaningful connections, but will also give them a head start to reading and understanding music. I am knowledgeable of how to play, but I do need some assistance acquiring my own to implement into my lessons. I will also need slide lubricant to keep the trombone working well and maintained.
