Research shows that one of the best ways to engage students in reading is by using culturally responsive texts and authentic literature in the classroom. My colleagues and I believe that it is important that we read books and use instructional texts that reflect the ethnically diverse and culturally rich background of our students, so they can see themselves in the characters they read about. We have made a commitment to move away from using texts that feature protagonists of the dominant culture, and instead, expose our students to books that feature female, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ protagonists. Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan, is one novel that we feel our students, especially those who identify as Latinx, will connect with. The protagonist is a young girl whose family immigrates from Mexico to California during the Great Depression. We would love to have two class sets of the novel, so that all of our the 4th graders will benefit from the rich discussions and lessons that this novel will surely spark!
