These books will help to reinforce our goals of learning the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in the art classroom for grades K-5th. They will also serve as a literacy support as I connect art to our school's literacy and math goals. School-wide data has shown that our students would benefit from additional opportunities to read aloud and listen to model reading, which is what I will be able to support by incorporating more books into art. In addition, the stories told in these books are a wonderful inspiration for projects throughout the year and examples of how art influences illustration and story telling. These books introduce students to famous artists such as Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, while inspiring them and helping them feel more confident about making art themselves. They are also useful in establishing a foundation for learning how the Elements of art and Principles of Design are connected to everyday life, across content-areas. For example, Mouse Shapes, by Ellen Walsh, teaches children about different shapes and how they can be combined to outwit a cat. This simple story supports art, as it builds upon the Mouse Paint book I already own, and reinforces math standards for kindergartners. As an art teacher, I am always looking for opportunities to make art more accessible to my students and connect art to daily life situations. I would really appreciate your help in accomplishing my goal of making literacy a priority in my art classroom! Thank you!
