Yes, You Can Read!

Funded Nov 16, 2024

Thank you so very much for your contribution to our classroom library, and thank you to Reese's Book Club for your support! The students have had a lot of fun opening the packages and organizing and decorating the space. They voted on a slogan, and each student drew part of the designs that we painted onto our library wall. Students are currently sorting and labeling books by genre. They are feeling proud of the library and have a real sense of ownership over it. In fact, it's the first place some of them go when they come into the room, to admire their handiwork.

Plus, everyone has found something they are excited to start reading. In the next week, we'll be teaching lessons about how to use a library and how to choose a book that's right for you. After that, students will select their books and be able to enjoy independent reading time, just like their peers. It will be a great opportunity for them to practice the decoding and comprehension skills we've been working on in class, but in a book of their choosing, rather than the mandatory passages of our lessons. This will be a lot more meaningful for our students, and will help set them up to move beyond vowel drills and summary exercises to become truly independent readers.

Thank you for helping our students experience success and develop an appreciation for the joy of reading a great story from a freshly opened book.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Varrichio
