  • Creating a Classroom Oasis With Flexible Coffee Shop Seating!

    Funded Mar 17, 2024

We are writing to express our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donations, which have made it possible for us to introduce new flexible seating options in our 5th grade classroom. Your support has truly transformed our learning environment, allowing us to create a space that caters to the diverse needs of the students. The addition of stools and wiggle seats has not only made our classroom more comfortable but has also fostered a sense of ownership and responsibility among the students for their learning space. The students were SO excited to unbox all of our new seating and the new furniture helped us feel like we were getting a bit of a new beginning in our class.

The impact on our class has been remarkable. Students continue to have the freedom to choose seating arrangements that best suit their learning styles, which has significantly enhanced their focus and engagement during lessons. The flexible seating has also encouraged collaboration and communication, as students are more inclined to work together in groups and share ideas. The stools make it really easy for them to gather around one table and work in groups. Overall, the new seating options have created a more dynamic and inclusive classroom atmosphere, where every student feels valued and empowered to succeed. Thank you once again for your kindness and support; you have made a lasting difference in our classroom and in the lives of our students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hwang

  • iPads for Change

    Funded Mar 22, 2018

Thank you again so much for your generous donations! My students and I have been so grateful for our new additions to our classroom! We love our iPads and treat them with great care.

We have been using the iPads heavily for research. Last year, we used it to help us with our "I Am" portraits, inspired by Edward Biberman. This year, we are using it as a learning tool to help us with our comprehension during our Island of the Blue Dolphins Unit that we will be extending to a project on California Regions. As we're reading the book, we are coming across some strange creatures that we've never heard of, like abalone, red whales, and devil fish (we learned that devil fish is actually an octopus). As soon as we come across a new wildlife, we look it up on our iPads and our knowledge grows!

We have also been using the iPads as a coping strategy through the Breathe App where students who need to take a break can input their feelings and can listen to a guided meditation to help them calm down. This has helped greatly with students who have big feelings after recess and lunch or during learning time when they're faced with challenges.

These iPads have helped bring our community together by making collaboration fun and engaging! We plan on also implementing them during our Math Workshops as a Math with Technology station to help prepare us with the CAASSP test in May.

We cannot wait to continue using these iPads as learning tools! We are forever grateful for your support! Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hwang

Diversity, empathy, belonging--these are all big themes that we are exploring this year as a class. First we started with ourselves and have been working hard to protect our classroom's values of respect, integrity, and empathy by upholding them each passing day. Third grade is a big year for students because it is when they truly begin to think for themselves. It is when most of them are able to read to learn (rather than focusing on learning to read). It is an exciting year in their learning, and we have a whole lot of learning ahead of us. Our year ahead will include studying the history of Los Angeles in order to envision and plan for a better future. This study will include looking into the LA River; the Tongva Native Americans; the Pobladores; and more recent events like the LA Riots and the Women's March earlier this year. We will need iPads to do the best research we can to make informed decisions about our future. We will use these iPads for good, and they will be a vital part of our arts-integrated units in which we integrate Reading, Writing, Theater Arts, Visual Arts, Music, Dance, History, and Science into a GIANT unit on our city. We also need iPads for having more opportunities to practice our math and reading fluency for all of our students. Due to our student population, many students do not have access to technology at home and so are unable to develop important skills that they will need in the 21st century. Please help us dream of a better future for you and for us! Thank you!
