Reading can sometimes be laborious for my students. I've discovered in the last few years that students are gravitating towards more graphic novels to engage in reading. As these books increase in popularity, they don't stay on our shelves for very long. Students are absorbing these types of stories and are yearning for more! Graphic novels are in a constant rotation amongst classmates as readers recommend books to one another. Graphic novels promote reading in so many wonderful ways. They help reluctant readers feel less stressed while reading, increase fluency and promote visual perception and interpretation. Graphic novels have also inspired the artists in the room to create their own cartoons and illustrations. We'd love to add to our graphic novel shelf so that we have more choices for independent reading time during the day but also more stories that we can bring home to continue our reading enjoyment.
