Learning letters and letter sounds can be as simple as tracing a letter with your finger while saying the letter name, reading the picture that begins with that letter, and finally making the sound for that letter. In her book, The Next Steps in Guided Reading, Jan Richardson documented how 52 teachers from South Carolina and Tennessee used the above described method with over 1,000 students, including English Language Learners, and students identified with possible learning disabilities. At the end of the school year after implementing the alphabet tracing method, only one students did not know at least 40 letters, and the one child who knew less than 40 letters had severe learning challenges. Every child needs to own a book! There is evidence this approach has been highly effective. The problem is that my classroom has limited copies of alphabet books students can use to practice the letter recognition routine with. Even more so, if each student had an ABC book to take home with them, the child’s parents could support them in their child’s letter name and letter sound development. Every child deserves to own a book! Won’t you help these children learn to read?
