  • Books and Girl Power!

    Funded Sep 22, 2019

Thank you so much for contributing to this project. My goal with this project was to supplement my library, so that the girls in my class would feel engaged with their independent reading material. I am here to let you all know that it has been a success! I am delighted to report that both the girls and boys in my class been reading and talking about these books, from Cam Jansen to Babysitter's club. In the past couple months, every single student in my class has finished at least one of the books we received through this project. Some of my students have read almost all of them! Thank you all so much for making this possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Lim

  • What Do Kids Want to Read?

    Funded Nov 6, 2019

Thank you so much for donating to this project. My students will be so excited to see the new books added to the library. Children's books continue to change over time, just like our students. It is important for us teachers to keep our libraries updated so that our students find books with which they can relate. Thank you for making that possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Lim

  • Living in the Land of Stories

    Funded Oct 18, 2017

It has been a few months since we received our boxes of books from Donor's Choose. The moment my students saw the packages in the classroom, the whispers of, "are those the books...?" quickly grew into cheers and whoops of, "the books are here!" They were ecstatic. The students knew that they could choose to read silently when they finished their classwork early, so on that day (and most days thereafter) my students focused and zipped through their classwork so that they could squeeze in a few more minutes of reading time per day.

Since then, we've had a variety of discussions regarding the books. We've talked about which literary worlds we'd like to visit, and some students have even written fan-fiction using their favorite characters from these stories. As of now, every student in my classroom has read at least a few books from this donor's choose project. Some of my students have read every single book that was donated, and are eagerly waiting for the next books in Dragon Masters and Notebook of Doom. My students continue to read voraciously every day, and I am so grateful that you all made this possible.

Thank you all for helping fill my classroom library with great books, and for fostering a new generation of readers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Lim

There should be a word or a phrase for the feeling you get when you finish a great book in a series, go to the library for the next one, and find out that it's already been checked out! Let's call it Next Book Anxiety. It all started when a student asked for a recommendation for silent reading. Another 3rd grade teacher had just recommended that I read a six-book epic, called The Land of Stories. That day, I went out, bought two copies of book 1, and handed one to the student the next day. Other students saw this, and asked if I had any extra copies. As of now, I have bought 4 copies of book 1, 3 copies of book 2, and one copy each of books 4-6. My students read whenever they get a chance, and they are always excited to discuss their favorite moments and characters. I now have 5 or 6 students coming up to me daily, asking me for the next book in whichever series they happen to be reading. I'm proud of my students for creating an environment in which even my most reluctant readers are asking for more books to read. Unfortunately, like most classroom, I only have one or two copies of each book. The book series that are currently trending in my class are The Land of Stories, Boxcar Children, Notebook of Doom, and Dragon Masters. With each passing day, more of my students are afflicted with Next Book Anxiety. Please help me get more of these books with this project!
