  • Bringing STEM Alive with 3D Printing!

    Funded Mar 21, 2018

Our new 3D printer is now up and running and is being implemented into our computer lab classes! I am excited to say that the reaction has been what I had hoped - excitement and enthusiasm! Not only have I seen their engagement during class time, I am also hearing from the classroom teachers about how our students are excited about learning and designing their own projects.

I think the biggest benefit to our new technology is the combination of creativity and problem solving with a tangible result. Right now my students are using Tinkercad.com to create projects. They have been working through the tutorials to familiarize themselves with the software and it's been great seeing them complete each step and start to create their own projects. Many of my students who claim they are "not good at computers" have found renewed interest in figuring out how to work with this new software, knowing they can print something at the end.

My goal is to display our finished projects throughout the school and share them on the school's social media. I am also excited about finding ways to incorporate 3D printing across the curriculum and discover new ways to implement STEM school wide. Thanks to your donation, we have a new and exciting way for the students to achieve that!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Troy

Technology is no longer an accessory to education; it is an essential tool for learning. Students are growing up in a world completely integrated with technology. It is a part of their daily lives. The Dremel 3D printer would be used regularly in the computer lab in grades K-6. It would be used in conjunction with classroom projects in math and science as well as in our own curriculum involving coding, problem solving, and learning new software. Transforming the concepts of computer programming, coding, and critical thinking into a tangible object the children can see and feel makes the experience much more powerful. Mathematical concepts such as circumference, volume, area and perimeter, ratios and proportions can be given real world applications. The possibilities are numerous and applicable to many areas of learning outside of STEM as well. It's the perfect tool to help math and science come alive.
