Buzzing for Coding in the Early Elementary Classroom
Funded Nov 23, 2022We created an after school program for 3 & 4 years old in a pre-k program. We have met once a week for 8 weeks. There are 15 students, 8 boys & 7 girls. Mostly Hispanic, but some White and Asian, no Afro American but Caribbean Island. They enjoyed the Bee bots. After initially just "playing" with them to learn how to control movements, we began initially with following the directions. Look at direction cards and punch in command. None could read and most did not know directions such as left and right. Many had trouble translating the direction picture cards to the direction on the Bee Bot. It took several sessions to begin to understand. We also played games using directions with themselves following the cards directions. Even though they got basic sequencing, by 8 sessions they could not code without directions given. Our hope is that eventually they will be able to code a sequence. In groups, we have had one student lay out direction cards and another student punch in the code. Then the rotate who does what. They really like this activity but, We feel they are not really understanding "coding". When they share their experience with their parents, they do state they are coding the Bee Bot robots.”

Funded Oct 24, 2017Dear Donors,
Normally this is supposed to come from the teacher but our teachers had a group of students come together and talk about what we really liked about receiving the Scholastic Junior magazine each month. It surprised us that we all liked something different about the experience, but no matter what we liked, it would never have been possible if Donors Choose had not helped us out. So here's HUGE shout out of thanks to all that donated. WE APPRECIATE YOU. So without further adieu, here is what we have to say...
" I really like getting the magazine because it allows me to read really funny political cartoons." -Jayla
"We've learned so much about other countries and how they impact the Unites States of America." - Ava
"Children around the world have such different experiences. I did not really know this until I read this magazine." -Steven
"I really like talking to my friends about what I've read in the magazine. It makes me feel like a can contribute to the world." -Gary
"I want to travel the world someday. This magazine me feel like I am already doing it. I also like the variety of articles in the magazine." - Hailey
Thanks again, and don't worry we will keep reading, keep getting smarter and lead the way in the future,
The students in Mrs. Eckert and Ms. Wood's i-SoLa class”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Eckert
