I strive to create an environment in my classroom that is both comfortable and inspiring. I like to rearrange the desks depending on the plan for the day. Sometimes we are enjoying book clubs in small groups, other times we are in student-led discussion through Socratic seminar circles, and yet some days we need autonomy of independent space for testing. Our current desks are large, bulky and do not make this task simple or easy. My students need an environment which allows them to effectively communicate with one another through projects and discussion seminars. Old school desks inside a classroom built so many years ago do not fit the current functions of a 21st century classroom. We function as a group, yet our form makes us focus individually. Being able to have furniture which allows for variety in arrangements will provide more opportunities for my students to effectively collaborate in discussion as they analyze literature, write fiction, and solve everyday problems in our community. These trapezoid desks will provide great flexibility in arrangements for my students to work inside the classroom space, effectively following the assignments for the day.
