    Funded Apr 9, 2025

Thank you so much for so quickly supporting this project! I told my students this morning, and they are so excited! We can't wait to get the order of books to add to our classroom. They just love reading the hilarious stories by Mo Willems. I look forward to hearing them read them shortly!”

  • Learning Math Through Playing Games

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

My students have been absolutely loving the variety of math games that we have in our classroom! There is a portion of each day where students have choices in what they work on and the most popular choice is playing math games. The games are definitely helping students further develop their math skills. One of the games is especially popular, the game I Sea Ten, and that game has helped students become really comfortable and fluent with knowing the combinations of numbers that add to ten which is an important first grade math skill.

Each time that I introduce one of the new games, they are so eager to participate and get a turn to play. They are getting better and better at playing games together and working through conflict resolution and sportsmanship as they play. The games are certainly accomplishing the intended goal of ensuring that math remains to be a fun subject and part of the day! Soon, students will be inviting other classes from different grades at our school in to teach them the games and share their love of math with others!”

  • Showcasing Great Books

    Funded Aug 6, 2018

My students and I are so excited about our new classroom library set up. I have been wanting to make a defined classroom library area for a long time and now, because of the shelving and plastic bins, I finally have what I have been envisioning all this time. My library is now able to easily store and display all of our amazing books.

My students love spending time in the classroom library. They are able to browse through the book bins to discover various genres of books. I believe that my classroom library is now much more inviting which encourages my readers.

I hope that my classroom library will continue to grow and become a central area in our classroom. I am amazed at how a few metal shelves have so drastically changed the feel of our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Walton

  • Phonics, Comprehension, Fluency, and More- Tools to Help Readers Grow!

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

My students have been using the new phonics and comprehension reading games as part of their word work routine. Each day, my students have around twenty minutes to practice word work skills. My students complete word and games at their "just right" level so that they are practicing the skills that they need to. Some of my students are working on vowel sounds so the Can Do vowel sounds game is perfect for them. Others are ready to be working on more advanced skills such as learning new vocabulary.

My students loved seeing the new games as they can get easily bored with the same materials over and over again. They love how they are playing a game and they do not even realize that they are learning while they are playing.

As our school and classroom continue to focus on improving literacy skills, I hope that my students continue to enjoy these reading games that enhance their learning. I look forward to adding even more similar activities to my classroom in the future.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Walton

  • Powerful Picture Books: Teaching Students to Never Give Up!

    Funded Oct 24, 2017

My students absolutely love to read! For this reason, they were so incredibly excited to see me bring in all of the brand new growth mindset books. Since receiving the books, I have been able to read the books as read alouds to my class. While reading the growth mindset books aloud to my students, I was able to teach them many valuable lessons about what growth mindset means. Before this project, my students had never heard of the term growth mindset. Now my students really understand that growth mindset is the idea that even when things are difficult, you should never give up. My class understands that if you have a growth mindset then you understand that you can practice more to improve.

My students can be found reading the growth mindset books all throughout the day. When students enter the classroom, many of them run right to their book bin and sit on our class rug to begin reading. During reading time, students read stories to each other. While waiting for dismissal, many students enjoy reading their books in the final minutes of school. I found that the growth mindset books got students even more excited about reading because of the inspiring stories. For example, we read a true story about a boy from Africa who was born with only one good leg and ended up bicycling all around Ghana in support of people with disabilities. My students were amazed to learn about his story.

I so appreciate how I was able to share these powerful stories with my students. New books always provide opportunities for students to learn and I am so glad that my class was able to learn about the growth mindset. I hope that by reading those growth mindset books so early on, my students will be able to carry the idea of the growth mindset with them for the rest of their lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Walton

The twenty-two picture books selected for this project were all chosen because they teach the idea of the growth mindset, an important concept for both children and adults! People who have a growth mindset believe that they can always improve and they bring a positive attitude to learning. People with a growth mindset do not shy away from challenges. On the contrary, people with a fixed mindset often give up when they are frustrated because they do not understand that they can improve. Students with a fixed mindset are scared of failing because they do not understand how failures can, in fact, lead to more learning. By reading books with characters who learn from their mistakes and who improve their skills with practice, my hope is that my students will learn to never give up on themselves. While my students are eager to learn at school now, I worry that as they grow up and school gets more difficult that they will have a hard time being challenged. I see my students giving up quickly now and being quick to ask adults for help. I want my students to feel comfortable when they are being challenged. The picture books will be read to the class as part of a large growth mindset unit. As I read the books aloud, we will discuss the decisions of the characters and how the characters were able to work hard on their goals. This growth mindset unit will consist of reading not only fiction books but also non-fiction books. By reading the book Your Fantastic Elastic Brain by JoAnn Deak, students will learn facts about how their brains work and what actually happens when they learn. I cannot wait to help my students become people who are not afraid of making mistakes.
