My students need engaging picture books with rich language to read in the classroom. They need these books during our pre reading units as a way to develop language and start building a love of reading. My young Kindergarten students come to school with a lot of energy and an eagerness to learn. Most of my young students cannot read that is why our beginning of the year units are so very important. During these units, we teach them how to be readers and build their love of reading. We read aloud familiar fairytales such as The Three Little Pigs, The Gingerbread Man and The Three Bears. The students then use these familiar texts to “read” during independent reading time. These books have repetitive lines and rich language that the students use while they are “reading.” We do not have copies of these books in our room. We need these books so our Kindergarten students can start to become lifelong readers. My young students need books that engage them in reading and that they want to read. When children are engaged in what they are reading, they tend to try harder and be more focused on the book. This is when you see the students be more successful and increase their reading level. I am requesting high interest books with a familiar story and rich language to start my young students off right, I am asking for multiple copies of The Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, Caps for Sale, Harry the Dirty Dog and Koala Lou.
