Although my students love their fiction books, project-based learning about subjects and themes in their book will help them acquire 21st-century research skills that connect to literature that we read. We are currently reading Neal Shusterman's "Unwind" Dystology, which focuses on a distorted future for America's youth. Among my plans are a research project on teens in the justice system, and the creation of a program that would benefit teens with conflict resolution issues. This connection to real life problem solving would help engage my students and give them real life learning experience that they can pair with both fiction and non-fiction texts for added literacy practice.
