Pairing books from different genres can be very engaging. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is a classic. For years, students have been reading about Scrooge and the ghosts that visit him on Christmas Eve. These ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future force Scrooge to reflect on the choices that he has made in life and slowly, but surely, make him realize that redemption is of utmost importance. In A Long Way Down, Will, a teenager seeking revenge for his brother's death, also sees ghosts. However, these ghosts are of those that have died before him and make him question whether he should follow his neighborhood's rules of revenge or make another choice for himself. These books will allow my students to see how their decisions and actions can change their lives. They will see how their upbringing and experiences can guide their pathways. Students' eyes will also be opened to see that others may have to make more difficult decisions based on their own individual circumstances. Curiosity and discussion are sure to collide as students read through the paired texts. Just as the ghosts in both A Long Way Down and A Christmas Carol influenced the respective characters in the texts, my students' views and beliefs are sure to be challenged and changed.
