Flexible Seating: Creating a Suitable Learning Environment for Every Student
Funded Oct 18, 2017Upon walking into the classroom and seeing the new seating options in the back of the room, my students eyes were beaming and questions were being asked left and right. "Is that for us?" "Can we use them?" "Can I bounce on the ball!?" We quickly gathered on our carpet area where I shared that it was thanks to a group of giving individuals, some from Sacramento and others from around our nation that we now had seating OPTIONS in our classroom. "You mean people that don't even know us?" asked one of my third graders.
And it is thanks to individuals that might have never stepped into my classroom but who believe that every child should have equal access to education that my students now have multiple seating options on any given instructional day. Students have access to the yoga ball and wobble chair table throughout the day. I've noticed that they are more inclined to using these seating options during independent work time. Rocking or bouncing as they get going on the day's math practice or as they read a few more chapters of Captain Underpants.
As the year progresses with our new seating options and we continue building new procedures and routines to use them to their fullest potential, I have also been creating further seating arrangement options around the classroom. As can be see in my uploaded pictures, we now have a low table which students can work around while sitting on cushions. The idea behind these new seating arrangement, including the elastic bands that students now have on their normal chairs, is to give students a variety of seating options depending on their physical and focus needs.”
