Have Readers, Need More Books!
Funded Apr 17, 2021We are so grateful for the new books that have been added to our library!! I book talk at the beginning of each month so that students have an opportunity to hear about several options for their book reports. They get just as excited about new books as I do, and I often have to create a waiting list for books because everyone, even the "non - readers" want to try them out! I made a point to let the students know that new books were arriving, and I had so much help unpacking and lots of "ooohs and aaahs" while looking over the new titles!
So far all of the books have been checked out by multiple readers. The autobiographies and biographies I ordered have especially been a big hit. We picked some very adventurous choices this time, and the kids have responded well. Fantasy tends to be a genre that is difficult for students to get into, but the picks in this grouping have been a hit! I have almost made my way through all of the selections as well. I find that if I can say that I have read the books and can talk about them with my students, they are willing to try new books that I recommend.”

Toys as Tools for Learning!
Funded Mar 24, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donations! We were able to add several fidgets and sensory toys to our classroom. These tools are invaluable in helping my students use their time appropriately, and now we have such a great selection!
The classroom is set up so that students can use these toys for break time after they complete an assignment. They can also use the tools to occupy their hands while listening to a lecture, which was SUCH a help during our virtual learning days. They were so excited to help unpack the boxes and are still excited all of these months later! They love these toys and help to take care of them and make sure they are put away properly so we can keep using them.
We often use the toys during story time, so that they are occupied while listening. We have even used them during math lessons. During the last semester I had a student who hated math, but if I let him play with the sensory toys while I was at the board teaching the math, he would pay attention and even answer questions! These tools that you helped me secure have literally been a life saver! Thank you so much!”

Funded May 23, 2019First of all, THANK YOU so much for helping us to improve our classroom library! Having new books to share with my students is a great way to start the new year!
My classroom is a resource room for at risk and special education students. Most of my students could be called "reluctant readers". Sometimes this is because they are not great readers and it's difficult for them, or it could just be that they think they don't like to read. I tend to think that most kids just haven't found the right book. I have a large library in my room and I read a lot of young adult books so that I know which books to recommend to the students. I am able to recommend books for every genre that is assigned to the students and they come to me daily to help them pick the right book.
Because I have such a wide selection of books, students come into my room several times a day to pick out books and often ask for help choosing the right one. It is my hope that having a great environment for reading will create readers out of students who haven't previously enjoyed books, and hopefully make school a better experience!”
