Bring Classic Vinyl to a Music History Class in Harlem
Funded Dec 4, 2024The addition of our classroom turntable has transformed the way my students experience music. Instead of simply streaming songs, they're engaging with albums as full, intentional works of art—listening from start to finish, appreciating the details in sequencing, and understanding music as a physical, immersive experience. I held a short workshop to teach students how to use the turntable, and since then, it's become part of our daily classroom culture. Students now have the chance to bring in their own records, play music before class begins, or choose an album that complements the day's lesson. The simple act of dropping the needle has brought a sense of wonder and ownership into our learning environment.
Students have expressed how much the turntable has deepened their connection to the music we study. Alexa shared that she now values listening to music without just searching for a single track—she enjoys exploring an album and seeing what's in store. Alejandro said it's given him a new perspective, letting him experience music the way people did in the past, which has made our lessons on the history of rock and roll feel much more real and relevant. Anastasia reflected that the turntable has made listening more meaningful and authentic, especially as we've explored how albums became artistic statements in their own right. And Chloe, who brought in her own treasured copy of What's Going On by Marvin Gaye, was able to share something personal and powerful with her classmates—an experience that set the tone for an inspiring morning.
Thanks to your generosity, the turntable is now a fixture in our classroom—a bridge between the past and present, and a daily reminder of how meaningful music can be when it's not just heard, but truly experienced. This project has opened doors for my students to engage more deeply with history, with art, and with each other.”

Funded Mar 25, 2025I can't thank you enough for your generosity. 12 years ago, when I first started at Columbia Secondary School, I went down to Alphabet City with cash in my pocket to buy our school its first drum set from a basement apartment - it was what I could afford at the time, and I knew the school would benefit from it. It's been a long time since my Avenue Bexcursion, and that drum set has certainly seen better days. Our music program has grown so much since then, and your donation will give students an amazing opportunity to experience the sound and feel of an upgraded, excellent condition, drum set to back all of our music related productions. Truly, thank you!”
