In this district, the Holocaust is not part of 7th and 8th grade curriculum. One of the worst horrors in history, and the most deadly genocide of the 20th century, is not explicitly covered in middle school curriculum in this district. Students could plausibly continue from middle school to high school without ever knowing about the Holocaust. My project would provide a class set of Art Spiegelman's graphic memoir Maus I and Maus II. This Pulitzer prize winning narrative tells the true story of Spiegelman's father Vladek, an Auschwitz survivor. The comic book brings history to life with heartbreaking detail and nuance so that students will never forget the Holocaust.
