The world language community, as it embraces Comprehensible Input teaching methods, is emphasizing the skills to listen to and read a language before writing and speaking. The later two skills come naturally over time through the practice of listening and reading. This follows the same pattern as first language acquisition. Simply taking the time to read and see the language in context will greatly improve the students' ability to engage with other texts, write, and speak in Spanish. These novels and magazines offer comprehensible input for students to read during a dedicated silent reading time during class. Getting students to read on their own is no easy task, especially if the texts are not interesting to them or they cannot make personal connections with the texts. The novels and magazines I have selected are written for adolescents and are written by authors who understand the need for comprehensible and compelling texts. These novels are interesting and oftentimes students don't want to stop reading them or they beg to know what happens next! Many of the novels also offer a glimpse into other cultures and help to incorporate more global learning opportunities in my classroom. They also include a glossary that allows students to look up new or unknown words. This helps to prevent students from becoming easily discouraged, regardless of what level they are at with the language.
