Help My Students Build Legacy Through Financial Literacy
Funded May 2, 2022My class from the previous school year (2021-2022) were introduced to the Legacy card game at the end of the school year. Upon introducing the card game, my students were really excited and intrigued. The visuals were especially of interest to the students. Once I introduced each round of the game to the students, they were very excited to play. They loved being able to choose their careers and once they saw the salary, they were even more excited to play. They were also interested in learning new vocabulary words including: assets, liabilities, stocks, inheritance and insurance.
At the beginning of this current school year (2022-2023), I introduced the Legacy card game to smaller groups of students during lunch time. They were as equally excited to learn more about the game. They especially liked the goal of the game which was to see who would have the most wealth. I am looking forward to continuing to introduce the game to more students. It is important for my students to have financial literacy and understand the importance of building wealth.”

3rd Grade Mathematicians Need Flexible Seating!
Funded Dec 3, 2019My students absolutely love our wonderful resources! We are so thankful to be able to use them in our classroom every day. The students are having so much fun using the math materials during center time. They are always beaming with excitement while collaborating with partners to use the math materials.
Prior to receiving our resources, I told my students that I had a surprise for them. When I unveiled the surprise, the looks on their faces was priceless! My students love using the flexible seating options. I have noticed a great difference in their engagement as well. Students have been able to focus more effectively to complete their school work. They are also sharing the materials with each other nicely. This project has been such a success and we are hopeful that we will be able to add more flexible seating options to our classroom in the near future.”

This classroom project was brought to life by An anonymous classroom supporter and 8 other donors.Help Us Build Our Reading Lives!
Funded Oct 12, 2017My students and I are so grateful for your generous donation. This project has positively impacted my students' education. My students were so excited when they received their snacks as part of the Donor's Choose package. They were often hungry hours before our lunch period. Having a daily snack helped my students to concentrate during their independent work time. Students were no longer asking when it was going to be lunch time because their snacks satisfied their hunger.
In my classroom, students love to read non-fiction texts. They love talking about non-fiction texts and learning new information that they can teach others about. Due to a lack of non-fiction texts for my students to read, they were thrilled that they were going to receive Time for Kids and Scholastic News on a regular basis. These materials were utilized in several ways.
The articles in the magazines were read aloud to my students and they were able to engage in meaningful discussions around those current topics. In addition, students also read aloud the text which helps to build their reading fluency skills. They enjoyed asking questions and making personal connections to the text. When we first received these magazines, my students were learning about fiction reading and how to build their skills as a fiction reader. Therefore, during independent time, they read fiction books. It was great being able to provide my students with both fiction and non-fiction texts to read.
Once we began our information reading unit, I was easily able to make connections with lessons I taught during reading workshop. One of the third grade standards is for students to be able to determine the main idea of a text and the supporting details. They were able to practice by determining the main idea of the article they read and identifying the details to support it.
My students will be taking the New York state English Language Arts test in the spring for the first time. The news review multiple choice questions in the back of the magazine are a great way to check their understanding of the articles. The videos associated with the articles were also a great way to engage my students in their learning. Since we were not always able to navigate these magazines as a whole class, I also gave students magazines to take home so they can share and discuss with their family members. As a result, my students would always ask when they are going to get another Time for Kids or Scholastic News magazine. As their teacher, I get excited when I see the magazines in my mailbox because I know it's going to excite my students.
I know that a subscription to these magazines has increased my students' love of reading and learning. They are constantly building their understanding of non-fiction texts and text features because of their access to these magazines. We are so happy to continue to utilize these materials in many different ways for the rest of the school year.”
