To apply their learning and deepen understandings, students need clear visual directions as they embark on independent classroom work. Visual directions, especially for English Language Learners, read more clearly and quickly than words, but my classroom lacks a dedicated space for this essential tool. With limited whiteboard space in my classroom, we need an easel-sized whiteboard to dedicate to "exit directions." Visual exit directions communicate which materials students need to complete work, what they must do, where to put their work, and what to do when they finish working. The visual exit direction strategy is a recognized and researched best practice integrated into the ENVoY system for nonverbal classroom management. I've received two days of ENVoY training, but I need this whiteboard easel to implement it. Here I will display visual directions every day that will help my students apply their learning effectively during independent work. Confusion shouldn’t stand in our way as we build our academic language to argue, craft stories, and share our perspectives in English. Please help my students deepen their learning through funding this whiteboard: a simple, dedicated space for visual exit directions.
