Many of the students I work with have difficulty staying focused in class. They may miss out on important directions and feel frustrated or anxious. Some may find things in their environment to distract themselves or to make themselves feel better. Others may simply "zone-out"; missing important academic content.
I want my students to have access to resources to help them stay focused and calm in the classroom. With the proper tools, they will feel more comfortable and capable in their classes and will be less likely to fall behind in school.
As middle schoolers, it is important that my students learn to advocate for themselves. I hope to create a center in my room that has a variety of fidgets and calming tools for students to check-out as needed to help them focus or feel less anxious in their classes. This center would include kneaded erasers (which have multiple functions), sensory bottles, scented bean bags, coil key-chain bracelets, and more!
Students would also work on personal responsibility by being required to sign out and return their fidget of choice.
