My project is focused on increasing student reading. Students that read more typically do better in all of their content classes. I want to improve students' reading comprehension, critical thinking, and overall love of reading. By the time students reach middle school, many of them lose the desire to read for pleasure. Many students that do not enjoy reading tell me it is because they do not find any books that are interesting to them. I believe this lack of interest is in part due to the fact that students do not see themselves in the books available to them. I want to give my students the opportunity to develop a love for reading by allowing them to choose books from a diverse selection and complete reading assignments in my class. Students will be assigned a bi-weekly book review on a book they choose from my classroom library. Additionally, students will participate in literature circles where they will collaborate together to analyze, visualize, demonstrate, illustrate, and review books as a group. Having students engaged in books, reading more books, analyzing story structures and central ideas, and writing using books will definitely enhance my students' love for reading. Having this classroom library will also help strengthen my students' literacy skills which will benefit them in all content areas.
