This is the first official year of the World Music department, and we cannot finish the year without instruments. The Cajon drums and minor percussion instruments will allow the rhythms our students have been composing come to life. My students have a natural instinct when it comes to music and, as a teacher, I want to be able to provide them with the resources they deserve. In our urban setting, it is easy to hear noise from our classroom windows. Cars, buses, horns, kids at recess etc., are amongst many things that can produce noisy sounds. How do we take those everyday sounds and make them sound musical? We embrace them! We listen and categorize sounds, organize them, and try to reproduce them without the headaches. This has been a great way to start learning music for the first time, and has even led to many funky rhythms on paper. Now it is time we showcase our funkiness as an ensemble! Music can be simplified as organized sound. We can manipulate these sounds to communicate feelings and emotions. I want my students to be able to apply our knowledge of rhythm composition, music reading, and sight reading skills, and start making music together. This will allow our music program to take a place in the city of love!
