In my freshman Advisory class, we work towards the goal that, despite the high level of socioeconomic disparity in our classroom, we can overcome obstacles to achieve our goals. We want to read the book 'Queen of Katwe', a biography about a Ugandan national chess player who overcame many obstacles (including illiteracy) to play chess at the top level. We want to learn and challenge each other to play chess and use these translatable skills for our lives. We want to learn about the history and culture of Uganda and get concerned about modern day issues of Ugandan people in order to think outside ourselves.
