The environment I want to create in my class is one of safety and comfort. A lot of our students at SSFHS don't have a quiet and comfortable environment to do their homework, socialize with their friends in a positive way, or other things that assist in their learning. I have a large classroom space with a smaller group setting of students, including a study skills class that students are able to complete homework, and learn transition and study skills. As a new teacher, I am missing several types of materials needed in my history class for effective learning. Having a globe serves different kinds of learners to visualize maps and be able to have a physical piece in their learning that they can reference. I have also asked for a proper pencil sharpener as I currently don't have one, pairs of scissors for students to do projects and other work required in my classes, and pencils so students have access to them when they need. A lot of special education teachers have a nice space set up in their classes where this is possible, and student engagement in academics increases because of it. Not all students learn the same, so I want to encourage different ways of learning by allowing for students to learn somewhere other than a desk. Various types of seating including the dorm chairs and bouncy ball seats can help with students who need to move or who need to learn in a different way. Board games are a great way to stimulate critical thinking in the smallest of ways. In the study skills class, students will finish their work and be glued to their phones. I want to encourage students to keep off of their phones and instead socialize with each other.
