  • Decodables for Kinder!

    Funded Nov 19, 2023

Room 110 Kindergarteners are so so grateful for the money you have given to fund this project. Our class was in desperate need of decodable books, the only kind of books kids can have to really learn to read. A decodable book has words you can decode easily by the sounds letters make. For instance, the word cat is easy to decode, because each letter makes its standard sound. The word school is not easy to decode, because of the silent h and double vowel. The problem is that we have not been provided books with decodable words. This means my kids have not had books they can read.

Getting decodable books in this classroom was the important next step in fixing the flawed curriculum and resources that have been given to teachers the last decade. Decodable books follow the science of reading approach, and are truly the best way to teach kids to read.

The kids have been reading these books everyday and love them so much. And I love seeing them have the books they need to become great readers. Thank you for your support of our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Scully

  • Fun With Fundations

    Funded Jan 30, 2023

Thank you so much for your generous contributions to our project! The kids were so excited to see the new fundation whiteboards. We used them immediately and and the kids now use them almost every day.

You have helped to provide a crucial tool for my students' development as writers. The Fundations lines help them learn to write letters correctly, and provide great spacing for writing words and sentences.

These whiteboards will be used by many more kids over the years, and donors like you are the reason they can access these expensive but crucial tools. Thank you so so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Scully

  • Cubbies and Books

    Funded Jan 30, 2022

I am so grateful for the donations that have supported my classroom. The kids were beyond excited to see their new backpack cubbies. They love having this personal space to safely store their belongings, and it has greatly improved organization in our classroom.

I haven't given them the books yet, but these books will be great gifts to send them off to first grade. I am working on writing individual messages inside each book, to make them a great keepsake to hold onto. They are all so excited for first grade!

We feel so lucky that donors choose is allowing our classroom to be a place that not only survives but thrives. Teachers and classrooms are given so little, and these donations provide the funding needed to help our kids learn and grow.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Scully

  • Art Supplies and Books

    Funded Oct 15, 2021

I am so grateful for the donations that led to more resources for my students and me.

These new art supplies are creating opportunities for unique projects. With tissue paper, rainbow scratch paper, and fun frames, we are exploring new ways to make art and express ourselves. The students were ecstatic to see the new supplies.

The stapler and craft containers have been very useful for the functioning of our classroom. The storage boxes have helped me organize my library and create a new collection of Leo Lionni books. The kids are loving these new books.

Each of these supplies have been so helpful to me and exciting for the kids. They all contribute to the growth of our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

  • Distance Learning Supplies for Kindergarten

    Funded Sep 14, 2020

The resources you helped purchase have been essential during distance learning. I was so worried that my kids would have nothing they could use at home. But thanks to you, they have all the supplies they need to be successful in kindergarten, even from their homes.

Every week the kids pull out the books you bought and read them with me, their family, and on their own. Most of these kids have no access to real books at their level. The only books they can read are on the computer. But now they can hold these books in their hands and point to words and pictures as they should.

The writing styluses have been essential for handwriting. So much of our work is on ipads and chromebooks, and with a stylus the kids can still practice handwriting skills digitally. I had students getting so frustrated using their fingers to write, and the stylus has benefitted them greatly.

But the linker cubes have been the greatest gift of all. They are used for nearly every math lesson. Students at this age need something they can touch and count for addition and subtraction. I truly don't know how I would be teaching these lessons without these math manipulatives.

Thank you for everything you have given my class during this difficult time. Your generosity is not forgotten.”

  • Help These San Francisco Kindergarteners Experience Life on a Ranch!

    Funded Dec 4, 2019

WOW. Myself, Ms. Gaylord, Mr. Cuevas, and Ms. Carpenter are ecstatic that we got such a huge project funded so fast! We will now get to send all four of our kindergarten classes to Elkus Ranch for what is easily our favorite field trip of the year. Because of your generosity, our San Francisco students will get to take their learning outside the classroom and spend a day on a ranch! Thank you to each and every person who helped us reach our goal. We are so grateful for your generosity.”

  • EASELy the Best Way to Help My Kinders!

    Funded Aug 29, 2019

Thank you so so much for your incredibly generous donations. Because of you my students and I have the space we need for our science instruction. Teaching in a bungalow with little whiteboard space and zero storage has made my job more challenging. This easel has expanded my whiteboard space and provided more storage which I so desperately need.

Our easel is already full of student and teacher materials and covered in academic posters. It currently holds our poster we made about living things from our last science unit, and I can easily roll it around for students to see while they work. There are designated storage spaces on the easel where kids go to turn in work and grab materials. It has been such a great addition to our classroom!

It hard to express how happy one easel has made me, and how much easier it makes my job. Educational furniture is usually not supplied by schools, but is necessary for teaching. Thank you for adding this essential tool to my classroom that will be used by kindergarten students for years to come.”

  • San Francisco Students Spend a Day at the Farm!

    Funded Dec 19, 2018

We are incredibly grateful for the gift you have given to our students. Going to a farm was an experience our students will never forget! Many of them have never been able to interact with farm animals, and they were so excited.

Our kids got to participate in many fun activities to learn about farm life. They went into the greenhouse and planted seeds that they got to then take home. They learned about soil, compost, and all the various uses for plants. Then they went into the chicken coop where they got to pet chickens and see the eggs that they lay. The kids loved the chickens, and walked around flapping their arms, pretending to be chickens with them. After the chickens, the kids went into the barn where they got to feed and pet sheep. They learned about wool and the process of getting wool from the sheep to the store. They even got to see one week old baby lambs, which they loved. Then, they got to pet and brush donkeys, sheep, and goats out in the field. The kids went into another barn where they got to touch and hold real animal bones. They learned about predators and prey, and sorted animal photos into these categories. The kids got to run around and loved getting to spend the day out in nature.

Everything about this farm was a fun new experience for our students. Running in the mud, walking in a barn, and feeding farm animals, are all experiences these kids will remember for the rest of their lives. Your generosity allowed our students to have this experience. Thank you thank you thank you from our whole kindergarten team.”

  • Summer Wish List

    Funded Jun 22, 2018

Our classroom is so grateful for having these new materials to start our school year! We use our calendar every day to teach student's about the days of the week, months of the year, and the days within each month. Our skin color crayons have been essential for allowing students to draw themselves and others in their pictures. I use these crayons to teach them that our skin is unique and beautiful. I will use the books on disabilities in about 2 months, when we start learning about differences and supporting those whose needs are different than our own. We will also start using the classroom tote bags as book bags during reader's workshop in about two months. Once I know each student's reading level, they will get to shop for books and put them in this bag to read all week. The kids were so excited when they saw the bags and cannot wait to use them!

Knowing that I can count on donors choose to help supply my class with the necessary materials for success give me such relief as a teacher. We so often do not have the materials needed for each child, but with your donations we are one step closer. Thank you so much for supporting my students and each student that comes through this classroom in the following years.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Scully

  • Help Grow Our Garden of Classroom Books!

    Funded Oct 16, 2017

Again I am blown away at the generosity of the donors at Donorschoose. What you have given to my class is the gift of literature, a gift that will keep on giving for several years to come, for hundreds of students. In my kindergarten classroom, reading is happening everyday. I read books aloud to the students every day after lunch during read aloud time. It is definitely one of their favorite times of the day. The room gets quiet and the class becomes fully invested in the story. More than half of the books you helped purchase will be read as read aloud books to class. They cover diverse topics that will fosters discussions during and after the book is read. Several of these books are about disabilities, a very important topic to me as an elementary school teacher at a school with a high population of students with disabilities.

Read aloud time is used to teach reading skills such as comprehension or predicting. I will model how to do that skill through the book, and include the students in the process. Students will turn and talk with their rug partner about the book and what they notice. Read alouds are an essential element of literacy in elementary education, and I am so happy that you have helped my read aloud library grow. I have already read several of these new books to the class. We read a great book about responsibility the lead to a discussion about blaming others and owning our own actions, a really important issue for students this age.

In addition to the read aloud books, this project included several books that are from one of the students' favorite authors- Mo Willems. They love to read these books on their own, and I have seen them huddled around these new books reading together on numerous occasions. These new Mo Willems books are class favorites already and my advanced readers are able to read them on their own. Students read books from our classroom library when they are finished with work, and these new books are always the first they grab.

Thank you for supporting our library and my students growth as readers and life-long learners. Your generosity will not be forgotten!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Scully

My kindergarten class is an amazing group of diverse learners. I work with students from many different cultural backgrounds, with some students speaking up to 3 languages. I also teach students with disabilities who need additional resources and support. My goal as their teacher is to differentiate my instruction to meet their needs, whether I am teaching math or social skills. Everyday I work to build a classroom community where all students are respected, encouraged, and included. Kindergarten is a crucial year in a child's academic and social/emotional development, and I strive to be the best teacher for each of my students. There is no other job I could imagine doing. I am grateful to DonorsChoose for connecting me to so many wonderful people and organizations who want to help my classroom succeed this year and every year.
