As we look around our world today, we see that technology is changing the way we live. There is technology that is embedded in our everyday lives, such as television, cell phones, or computers. Technology plays an important role in our lives and will continue to grow as time passes and new and better things are invented. An article in 2016 by The New York Times stated that 65 percent of elementary school students’ future jobs aren’t a reality yet, and many of them are STEM careers. The goal of “Lighting a SPRK in Our Future” is for students to increase their knowledge in science, technology, engineering and math by using the hands on, engaging activities of the SPRK robot ball. Students will work in small groups to write code to control how the Sphero ball rolls and appears. When students complete lessons that explore the principles of math and science through programming, they will begin completing STEM activities that require them to engineer the Sphero to complete missions. These activities will foster creative problem-solving as well as teamwork.
A stimulating STEM education is essential for students to develop the basic analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills which are central to academic achievement and workforce readiness in the 21st century. The lessons for the Sphero include many real-world problems, such as speed, time, distance, percentages, etc.
By offering innovative, hands-on project based learning, tomorrow’s inventors and innovators are being inspired and lighting a SPRK in their future!
