Flexible seating options allows young learners to take ownership of their learning in many ways... not just by choosing a seat. First graders are still very young and developmentally speaking, are not physically built to sit in a chair or desk for long periods of time. By providing more flexible seats to my students, I am meeting their developmental needs but also providing them a platform for getting to know themselves as individuals and discovering their preferences. Wobble chairs, balance chairs, and pedals will provide my most active and energetic students to have a choice in a seat that allows them use up their body energy while they focus on class work. Many research studies have shown the benefits of fidgeting or movement for young children as a means to focusing. First graders are not meant to sit still in a chair! Meaningful learning occurs when students feel comfortable and valued in the classroom but also when they know what works for them as a learner and as a team member of the class.
