Our school building may be historic, but the creativity and collaboration that takes place within its doors is innovative. In order to foster these creative ideas, we are hoping to transform our learning space into an environment where students have options to come together and develop ideas, problem solve, and learn from one another. We also know that students may need areas to develop their own thinking.
Flexible seating gives students choice in how to utilize the space as best as possible to maximize their learning. Through the specific items being requested, it is my hope that our space will meet the needs of the students in their individual learning styles. We learn in a small classroom with little room for rearranging traditional desks or tables for change or varied options. Currently, the students sit in their chairs all day, with a few opting to find a space on the concrete floor during independent reading. The yoga mats, seat cushions, rug, stools, futons, and yoga balls will give students more comfort and warmth, as well as flexibility in location, regardless of where they choose to sit. They will also provide students with opportunities to move around, sit, stand, bounce, and recline. With all these various seating options, we will be keeping a few but removing many of the tables we currently use and will be replacing the work surfaces with more flexible and portable options through the TV trays and clipboards. Collectively, these changes will open up the space and allow better collaboration and learning.
Your generous donation to this project will help continue this transformation in not only our physical space, but also in the empowerment of the students and their ability to take ownership in their learning.
