School Supplies for Bilingual Reading Intervention!
Funded Aug 25, 2024Thank you so much!! These magerials will be so helpful to my students and I! One of my main roles in the school is working in small groups with students learning English. I like to have a lot of hands on materials for them to use during our lessons. Teacher materials can be so expensive and with these things, I’ll be able to create hands on materials quickly and efficiently.

Books for Spanish Dual Language Program!
Funded Aug 15, 2023Thank you so much for giving money to donate these books to the Spanish dual-language classroom. Our classrooms have students read based on a "reading level". Level A is the earliest reader. Our classrooms have ample English books organized by "Reading Level." However, it is hard in Spanish to always get the resources for these leveled books. It is important for us to have these books in Spanish as well for several reasons. The first is because it sends the message to our students that our Spanish reading is just as important as our English reading. Second is because if students are being assessed by reading level, the way they can adequately grow as readers is for them to have access to books on their level.
Thank you so much for helping our students with getting access to these books in Spanish.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The SONIC Foundation and one other donor. The Gift of Reading
Funded Jun 9, 2019These books were given to me many years ago, but I am still so grateful. At the time, I was teaching in a 2nd grade classroom, and I did not have enough books to 1. read with the students and 2. for them to read on their own. This project gave me an abundance of books, and I never had to worry about the lack of quality reading materials again. Yes, not only did my students have engaging books at their level, which helped foster their love of learning and improve levels, but it also allowed me to put my energy into what actually mattered. Teaching my students what they need to know.”

School Supplies for an Intervention Teacher!
Funded Aug 15, 2023Hello!
These materials have made a big difference in my teaching. I work with immigrant Spanish-only speaking children. I bring them to my office to support them in Spanish or English reading. These children can be of all ages. Therefore, I need to be thoughtful in approaching and engaging the students. Using hands-on, colorful materials does half of the work for me. Having index cards, dry-erase markers, and erasers all ready helps me stay prepared and spend less time worrying about how I am going to get materials and more time on the content I am trying to teach. Thank you so much for helping!”

This classroom project was brought to life by The SONIC Foundation and one other donor.Books Books Books! And a Fun Place to Sit.
Funded Aug 5, 2019Thank you so much for donating to my project years ago! These books made such a difference in the lives on my 2nd graders. At the time, my classroom did not have many Spanish language books and because of your donation, I was able to have a fully funded Spanish library. Thank you so much.
The students who really benefited from these books were my immigrant, English-language learners. Our Dual Language program helps these children in particular.
I am no longer a 2nd-grade teacher, but the books continue to live in that classroom alongside the fun chairs!”

This classroom project was brought to life by An Anonymous Funder and one other donor.Multicultural Representation
Funded Apr 18, 2018I'd like to thank you all for supporting my vision of creating a multicultural environment in my classroom by creating this door. As a part of this project, I had all of the students become aware of their ethnicity by having them re-create their flags out of construction paper. Here, my students learned what a flag was and how it is a visual representation of a country. It was a very cool and fun project.
Once everyone had a general idea of ethnicity and nationality we discussed the meaning of the words Unity and the words Diversity. I explained to them that diversity means the attribute of difference and how in many ways, especially ethnically we are a diverse group. We then discussed the value of diversity. Why is it good to be an environment where there are other people who are different then you? What can we learn? How can it be hard? We then discussed the meaning of the word Unity, in terms of togetherness and how we become more unified once we understand value the diversity in our classroom. Hence the term, Unity in Diversity. When the materials came in, I decorated the door with the paper colors and then placed the letters in English and Spanish. Then the students come and put their flags on the world. It was a very special experience and by having such a strong message in front our door, I think the students were able to internalize it and feel valued and represented. I will keep this decoration on my door next year as well. Thank you very much!”

Bilingual Books!
Funded Jan 8, 2018As stated previously, I teach in a Spanish/English Dual Language Classroom where students are taught in both languages and are expected to produce work in both languages, including Reading, Writing and Math. Since Reading and Writing are very language-heavy subjects, they have proven to be the most challenging parts of the day. Especially for the students who are learning language, the students who are either predominantly English or Spanish speakers. These bilingual books have made quiet a difference for them. In my classroom, I have created a special bin for them, and students are able to take them as "Choice Books" when they are doing their weekly book shopping. These bilingual books provide an access point for the students in particular who are learning language. During Spanish reading time, if they read a bilingual book, they are able to relate to the book and slowly understand what the words are saying by having the English translation right there and vice versa. I find that these books are particularly popular with language learners. Another benefit from this project were the Spanish translated series books such as Hombre Mosca and Elefante y Cerdita. Many of the Spanish dominant students want to read the popular Elephant and Piggie and Fly Guy, and Frog and Toad books, but can't, due to the language. By providing the Spanish translations, I feel these students feel they have an access point to what the other students are enjoying. It also helps me fairly assess them by having Spanish versions of these highly-used texts. These bilingual books have made a world of a difference in my classroom.”

¡Libros Libros! But Where Will They Go?
Funded Nov 15, 2017This particular Donor's Chose Project is helpful in relation to my students and their bilingualism. These bilingual picture dictionaries are designed so that students are to look through the table of contents and try to find the word that they want in the table of contents. Once they find the word, they can look through the pictures and see what it means in either language. It really helps my students a lot in their writing. The routine is that they are to write the word in their home language first, and then once they finish writing, use all the resources around them to help fix up their writing.
Also in this project were the book baggies. I ordered these book baggies in November and it is now April. Only one of my student's book baggies has ripped. As a dual language classroom, I require my students to have many books in their book baggies, and the zip locks just kept on breaking. These baggies were very practical and very stylish.”

Read To Us Maestra!
Funded Oct 4, 2017Thank you so much for your kind donations towards my class at the "Read To Us Maestra" project. As I said before, we are a dual-language classroom where half of the instruction is in English and half is in Spanish. We are following the TC curriculum with requires us to use specific books as mentor texts to teach a specific skill in reading and writing. We are provided with the English versions but not the Spanish. Therefore, students needed this support in their home language as well.
The first book we used was Cazadores de Monstruos to help us learn about how to use Mentor Text in our writing. We observed key things the author did such as using comparisons, dialogue, and figurative language to help the reader paint a picture in their mind. Students analyzed the text and then attempted to do it in their writing.
During reading, we have been using the non-stop fiction texts to see how do authors use text features to help us figure out what tricky words mean. The class studies many English books where they see vocabulary words/text boxes/glossaries but to see these features in Spanish books really helps them solidify the skill as well as realize that in Spanish we do the same thing.
I would sayb the students whose first language is Spanish benefit the most from these texts because it makes the skill much more accessible to them if they are able to see it done in their home language.
Once again, thank you for all the donations. They have sure made a change in my classroom.”

Ms. Quinones
