Low Income, Yet Amazing Students to Benefit From Technology!
Funded Dec 24, 2018First, I have provided the 75 style headphones to the ENL department and are being shared amongst several ENL classes that serve at least 90 students per day. Our school has new students, from many other countries, registering continuously throughout the school year. When I brought their box into the classroom, the smiles on their faces were priceless and they were clapping with utter excitement. They are now able to use their computers to listen to new vocabulary words, with pronunciation's via audio, use google translate for reading and really interact with learning their new language with exciting programs.
For my 2 self-contained classes, the other headphones have really brought joy to their lives. They were so reluctant to do independent reading and are on so many various grade levels, that having them choose a book and sit quietly reading for 30 minutes, 2 times per week was quite challenging, especially with their disabilities. Now, they are able to listen to audio books for stories that interest them and I can use sites such as common lit to bring guided audio books to enhance their reading fluency. While reading used to be their least favorite periods of the week, now they beg to read independently, which has aided their reading comprehension to increase.
I also use websites such as flocabulary, which provides a video, vocabulary, quiz and game for any given topic that we are learning in that lesson. This provides self learning for them and constant engagement. My students who have severe ADHD, these headphones have been a life saver, since they are so stimulated by the interaction through these sites, they are not distracting other students and are truly excited to learn. We are all extremely grateful for your support to our classrooms, and we lend the headphones to nearby classes when they need them, when we aren't using them, so other students are benefiting, as are other teachers.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. McAuley
