Help me give my students the tools they need to do the hands-on work of a Scientist in class, including magnifying glasses, thermometers to record temperature, and magnets to understand push and pull in NGSS standards.

  • STEAM Garden

    Funded Oct 31, 2024

My students have had a fantastic time connecting the garden with Science. The generous donations helped us do several observations with soil in class. We were able to discuss their nutrients and different types of plants that could flourish in the garden. We talked about the layers of the earth and address NGSS standards for Earth Science in 4th and 5th grade. We spoke of the cause and effect of rain, sunlight and wind.

The plants and soil also gave students a connection to real earth science. They were able to put the NGSS Science and Engineering practices into motion and some of them developed a love for gardening. We researched seasonal plants and then connected with local nurseries to fill the garden.

Finally students were able to build community together. The garden allowed them to come together and enjoy nature. It truely addressed some emotional needs that our military familis have. Thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

  • Engineering and Robotics with LEGO SPIKE!

    Funded Nov 11, 2024

The impact of lego engineering has been powerful. All of my 4th and 5th grade students enjoyed working with and learning with the legos. The generous donations allowed all of my students to address NGSS standards in Science and Engineering. Many of the students do not have legos at home. Therefore having them in class made a tremendous impact on student engagement and teamwork. Many students who would not work together before collaborated on building projects.

I also noticed the bulding materials had an impact on shy students or students with special needs. They were able to build something substantial and also build confidence. In short it differentiated their learning and helped them build confidence and understanding about themselves. Students were able to experience hands on learning and collaborate with their learning.

Finally the legos help provide a scaffold to a potential lego or robotics club in the future. Many students expressed a desire to pursue this interest in the future at our school or middle school. Thank you again for allowing my students the opportunity to expereince hands on learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Ashworth
