Developing Effective Habits and Literacy
Funded Feb 1, 2019Although my requested materials were not supplied because of their unavailability, my students and I are still extremely grateful for the alternative books that came because of your donations. Your financial contribution enabled me to provide my students with high-interest young adult novels that are currently bestsellers and highly recommended by other educators. Many of my students immediately checked out the books and were especially grateful because they have finally found a book that they were interested in finishing. One student in particular borrowed a book on Friday afternoon and returned on Monday morning with a full report of how much he hated the ending! This same student always complains to me during silent reading time that I have no interesting books in my classroom library. Through these books, my goal is to inspire students to discover a love of reading and develop important skills necessary for their literacy growth.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Vicente
This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose.org Community and 3 other donors.Digital Literacy Skills
Funded Dec 4, 2018My 10th graders just finished their poetry writing project. With the help of the Chromebooks you've generously donated, students who came to class without laptops were able to complete their projects on time.
In our Writers' Workshop, we worked on writing an original poem inspired by events during the Civil Rights Movement. After researching about their assigned significant event from the Civil Rights Movement era, i.e., 16th Street Church Bombing, Emmett Till, Sit-in Movement, etc., students wrote a poem inspired by what they have learned. Many of them wrote from a persona of someone who lived through these events. They were also required to weave figurative language and/or literary devices into their poems. Upon completing their poems, students designed a poster of their poem on Google Drawings. In class, we took our time learning about the basic rules of design, such as using appropriate color schemes, inserting images from Creative Commons, and using QR Codes to inspire others to read further about the event they based their poem on. On one of the attached photos, you will see some of these finished posters hanging in our classroom.
Despite this current generation's exposure and experience with various technologies, this project taught my students how to use reliable sources, insert beautiful and free images under Creative Commons, and design with appropriate color schemes and font sizes. The five Chromebooks especially helped the handful of students per Class Period who came to class without a computer.”

Mrs. Vicente
