If I Can See It... I Can Do It!

This year our grade is departmentalizing its core subject areas! My classroom will be a Math Zone for the fifth grade students at my school. We will be engaging in fifth grade mathematical ideas with a focus on conceptual thinking. Also, our principal has chosen our classroom to be a "lab site" for the school. This designation assigns the responsibility of allowing open door access to guests and visitors such as superintendents, teachers, parents, and administrators from the district. We will be the model classroom for others to view. Furthermore, we are part of a coaching program created by Harvard University focusing on honing mathematical best teaching practices and leading to an overall improvement of our student academic achievement. Phew! With all that being said, we are in desperate need of a document camera. My co-teacher and I find ourselves lacking proper instruments to demonstrate and model our assignments and projects to our students. We are also unable to showcase student writing, drawings, and work because they are not projected to a SMART board. Since we have a wide range of abilities in our classroom with both general and special education students, our students are left with questions and frustration that can be easily alleviated with a document camera. Our aim is to raise our students' achievement and in today's 21st century high achieving classroom, it is incomplete without a document camera!
