My Biology and Chemistry class brings together students from diverse backgrounds. They represent a mix of culture, languages, national backgrounds, ethnicity's and races, many of whom are still enrolled in ESL classes. Some of these students have substantial prior education; others have much less. I recognize these diversity's and I try to organize my course around thematic units that I hope will motivate and interest students by focusing on issues relevant to youngsters lives. During most of our lessons, students are seated in their cooperative groups and lab groups. On the surface, there was no way to tell how students were grouped, though it was obviously not by ethnicity, language or race.
