My leaders love to create! Our school has had a STEM program since its opening a few years ago. This is the first year we are integrating art to make our program STEAM! STEM is all about asking and answering important questions. STEAM gives students the channel to express those answers in a creative way, with the integration of the arts. Up until now, we have not had a formal art program in our school.
Turning STEM to STEAM is not an easy task, but the benefits to students and the entire school community are tremendous. Practicing art engages many areas of the brain and has far-reaching effects on the learner’s mind. The arts promote the understanding and sharing of culture. They promote social skills that enhance the awareness and respect of others. The arts enhance perceptual and cognitive skills. Studies show that students who participate in the arts were superior in creative thinking, self-concept, problem-solving, self-expression, risk-taking, and cooperation skills. The arts have the capacity to engage everyone!
In STEAM we question like scientists, design like technologists, build like engineers, create like artists, and problem solve like mathematicians. In order to allow these leaders to create like artists, We NEED YOUR HELP!
We need a few basic fundamentals:
1. An educators drying rack – I teach 750 students in a week. All that art needs a place to go and dry where it will be safe.
2. Watercolor paper – these little leaders love to paint (A LOT)
3. Oil Pastels – the richness of the color and the easy workability is perfect to capture artistic representations of scientific topics like the Aurora Borealis
4. Black high pigment construction paper – for backgrounds, oil pastels and matting
Thank you for your consideration to help build this wonderfully enriching program!
