As a part of our slavery unit, we spend a good deal of time breathing life into the past through our examination of primary sources housed within the pages of Julius Lester's To be a Slave. Students are asked to record their thoughts, beliefs and reactions in their slavery journals. Currently I have a class set of To Be a Slave books. However, this is heavy material and there are times when students need more time to process the information. I do not have enough books to send one home with each student so that they can take the time they need to sit with and respond to the horrors of slavery. By donating to this project, you will be giving my students a meaningful and relevant look into the past and enable them to make important and insightful connections to the present. Your donation will help students to better understand their past and inspire them to use that knowledge to be the change they want to see our world.
