Project Drone
Funded May 27, 2021Thank you so much for your support in our classroom! The drone has opened up so many possibilities for the students to engage and participate in both academics as well as school community. We have gotten to practice simple tasks like reading instructions and interpreting visual directions. But most importantly, we have been able to see our school from a different perspective, both literally, and figuratively (as a place where fun and learning can happen simultaneously).
Seeing the students become so engaged with something so simple has been amazing. The simple task of learning how to remote control something in 3 dimensions brings to mind such fond memories of remote control cars, but on a whole new level.
The care that the students take with the drone is also admirable, and students who might normally have trouble with fine motor control in daily classroom activities, like writing or typing, are also the ones who take their time to really get to know the workings of the drone and also take their time to get it right. I'm also very grateful that students who don't have the means to use (let alone have) a drone have this opportunity to explore and learn like other's who have that privilege.”

Funded Feb 28, 2019Over the course of eight weeks, I watched students take leadership roles that had never considered themselves leaders. I saw student's confidence and self esteem rise as they found success in preparing the "food of the day" from scratch.
Each week, students would learn the history and nutrition behind what we were preparing. After watching a short demonstration, students would read through the recipe, gather the ingredients and necessary supplies, and go to work. They had to divide up tasks, organize themselves so everyone had a job and work together to successfully prepare the meal. They had to measure, calculate, chop, stir and mix the ingredients themselves.
They learned to share, encourage and support one another. They came up with their own norms and etiquette within their table groups. They made an extra effort and took pride in the presentation of the food they prepared. Since I didn't have access to a stove or oven, we were limited on what we could prepare. We did, however, manage to make homemade hummus and corn tortillas from scratch, concoct smoothies, chop salads, mix and cook pancakes and more. They also learned about the history and value of corn and the sunflower plant and all that they provide.
I am extremely grateful to those individuals that supported my project by purchasing my list of starter supplies. Your generosity is very appreciated. Thank you very much!”

Funded May 5, 2018Thank you so much for supporting our students! We appreciate your generosity so much as we are able to use what we have purchased every day.
When we first received the games, the kids were very excited to open them (as they are with any game). Jenga and Battleship were the instant favorites, but surprising to me, were the number of students who already knew how to play and were interested in beating each other in dominoes and chess! It was fun to watch them strategize.
These games were originally for use during conference week, but so far, at least 10 kids have been coming back into the class for part of their recess to play these games. A lot of students who had never played them before have also gotten crash courses on the rules as well.
Thank you again for helping with this project! We're already looking forward to using some of the concepts in these games in our math lessons (percentages) and art (spacing).”

Spraying Safe
Funded Oct 2, 2017Thank you so much for your generosity! When I told the students we were going to create a mural for a school altar to celebrate Día de los Muertos, they were very excited, but even more so when they found out they were going to be able to use spray paint. After discussions about using unique art mediums appropriately, vandalism, and the history of graffiti, the class was eager to get started.
I've tried this project in the past, but the quality and safety of the paint that we used was not what it should have been. Nut thanks to you, the students were able to safely practice using the paint and collectively create a wonderful backdrop.
Unfortunately, we have only been able to begin sanding our coffee table. The process was interrupted by the wildfires, but we plan to continue working on the project to refurbish the table for our school auction in the spring when we return to school. We hope you get a chance to see the finished product for that as well!”
