Bean Bags and Pillows, A Soft Place for Imagination!
Funded Sep 22, 2017The arrivals of the bean bags and pillows to my classroom have been such a treat. Each class period has been assigned a pillow rotation (days A, B, and C), in which the students can read on the pillows during our daily DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time.
The supplies arrived over days, and each day, the student saw more and more for our reading corner arrive. I had them wait until everything had arrived and we all understood our classroom rules before anything could be used. When the pillows arrived, different students unpacked and fluffed them, which added to their excitement.
Each day, my students are to read for minimum 15 minutes in my classroom, so that I can monitor their reading. Reading is a skill that must be practiced, and I can ensure that at least 5 days a week, my students are practicing reading because I watch them. As any educator knows, reading well is the key to most academic success.
I have 7 or 8 kids per pillow rotation. They are allowed to take a pillow and move elsewhere in the room to get comfortable while reading their book of choice. During this time, I read as well (modeling the appropriate behavior for them), but I also peek around and see what they are reading and how into the story they are. To see them be excited to read is one of the best rewards as a teacher - and a pillow filled corner in my classroom has added to their excitement!”
